Course Description
Anaphylaxis is a medical emergency that can occur with little or no warning. As such, every organisation has a duty of care to ensure that individuals at risk are identified early, that appropriate individualised plans are in place, and that staff are trained and prepared to respond effectively. Failure to implement adequate risk management strategies can have serious consequences—both legally and ethically.
This course covers the full scope of responsibilities and best practices for managing anaphylaxis risk, including:
- Developing and reviewing individual anaphylaxis management plans tailored to each person at risk.
- Collecting relevant medical information in compliance with privacy laws and organisational policies.
- Creating and maintaining risk minimisation strategies, from identifying environmental allergens to implementing allergen-free zones.
- Conducting regular reviews of action plans, policies, procedures, and risk strategies following incidents or policy changes.
- Developing a clear communication plan to ensure all stakeholders—staff, clients, parents, carers, and the broader community—are aware of risks, responsibilities, and emergency response procedures.
- Documenting all processes and responses according to legal and organisational standards.
Throughout this course, you’ll gain insights into practical implementation steps, access real-world examples, and be introduced to current resources and templates, including those provided by expert bodies like ASCIA and Allergy Aware.
By the end of the course, you will be able to:
- Identify individuals at risk and gather the right information responsibly and legally.
- Develop, implement, and maintain individualised anaphylaxis management plans.
- Conduct thorough allergen risk assessments for environments and activities.
- Create policies, procedures, and training plans that reduce exposure to allergens.
- Ensure your organisation communicates effectively and regularly about anaphylaxis management.
- Lead or support regular reviews to improve your organisation’s allergy safety protocols.
This course is more than just a compliance exercise—it’s about creating a culture of safety, awareness, and inclusion for all individuals who may be affected by severe allergies.
